- THE COMMONS -

The Commons is just as it sounds, a common space. As we have opened up our home to travelers, our Commons is a space we share that is meant to be your home away from home. It was the first structure we built in 2015 for us to call home, and in that time, we have learned so much about Hawai'i in this space. Reading, cooking, sharing in stories, making music or just talking over a simple cup of tea or coffee greeting the day with others over shared time.

Physically the commons in the 1st level of our main structure. It is the location of a shared kitchen space for any guests to use during our commons' hours of 7a.m. to 10p.m. As hosts we reside above it on the second level, and we often a share the space with many longer staying guests for the purpose of "Landecation," who we offer free lodging and meals to over their stay to tend the land, learn, and often teach us as well. If you're interested in this program, please let us know by contacting us through email directly. There is also a Lavatory for modern accommodations that is accessible outside of the common's hours, 24/7, for all you #1 & #2 needs. Infact everything from our aerial yoga training area also a music room, from our tv projector to our sowing, art, and lounging room is all the commons. And of course, the heart of any place one could call home, the kitchen is all in the open space of this commons. Everything that is except for the Lavatory, which of course is private, for obvious reasons.

We feel the best way to describe our commons, is it is just like a college dorm commons. It is a place to gather, a place to eat, a place to ask questions, to share in space like humans have for 1000's of years. Only in our modern world have we felt such places of needed community, have been separated from our social experiences. We're more than happy to share in this space and will provide very simple guidelines below, that as common sense as some of them sound, we still would like to outline them none the less:

  1. Commons is considered the first floor of our main structural homestead dwelling.

  2. Respect for all animals, people and property is Commons' sense, as this is a place to share with peace and comfort. Often the Dogs will love your presence here, and we as well as other guests share in friendly conversation. We love to cook, and cuddle with the dogs so you can often find one of us in the commons during the evenings.

  3. Commons kitchen is open for use from 7a.m. to 10p.m. for any personal use.

  4. You are not required to do dishes, as we prefer to do them for water conservation purposes.

  5. Lavatory room and showers are available 24/7, but please note that as we are off-grid, hot water and electricity is turned down from 10p.m. to 7a.m. All lavatory access is still available but know that those 1st world amenities will not be during those times.

  6. There are locks on the Lavatory for privacy needs, please unlock them when done.

  7. If as host is not present and you choose to let any of the dogs inside while hanging out in the commons, please make sure they leave with you when you do.

  8. Please use our compost bin for any food scraps.

  9. As our homestead is 100% off grid, please be considerate of energy use with simple actions, like turning off lights when leaving.

  10. High draw electronics like electric heater, Irons, or Coffee pots do not work off grid. We can still iron clothes, make coffee, and toast bread, but we do so in an old-school way that we are happy to share. Cell phones and laptops are 100% compatible with our off-grid system, but please unplug them if they are fully charged (It's also good for your device's battery life).

  11. We know many BnB hosts require guests to strip their beds, or take out their trash, etc... We do not. So please don't feel any need to clean any more than you feel necessary.

  12. If you choose to walk the property, for your safety, please use caution as the land is natural in its topography, so there can be uneven ground from natural lava flows.

  13. There are many edible foods on our property, but please ask before consuming anything for your safety, as well to make sure they are at their optimal.

  14. We are a shoes off house, but we highly recommend keep your shoes up or bring them inside as the dogs show their love to guests by stealing shoes

  15. Please ask if you need anything! If it's in our capacity, we're more than happy to provide :)
